About the Item

A mid-century figurative composition on a heavily mottled cream and buff ground: tall, mask-faced women with dark curling hair stand in loose robes of indigo blue, ochre and olive, one holding a lute, another a spray of blue reeds, with an ornate birdcage and a low table between them. Everything is drawn in nervous black line over broad flat colour, and the background is worked in a dense stippled texture that reads like weathered plaster or fresco. The palette is restricted to indigo, rust-orange, olive and charcoal on cream. Medium: colour lithograph on textured paper. Condition: Linen mat is toned and shows brownish staining along the upper and left margins; the sheet itself is toned; glass glare throughout.
