Forelli. A genre scene set in a shadowy arcade: at the centre a barefoot woman in a green bodice and dark skirt carries an armful of oranges and flowers past a heap of dark green watermelons stacked on straw, while a crowd of townspeople in hats, shawls and long coats stands beneath a tall stone arch behind. The tonality is subdued and earthy - olive, umber and grey with accents of orange, rose and teal in the clothing - and the paint is brushed loosely with soft edges throughout. Medium: oil on canvas. Signed lower right of the canvas, in dark paint, reading "Forelli-". Inscribed on the reverse or mount: Forelli-. Condition: Frame has noticeable losses and abrasion to the carved gesso with red bole exposed at several points; painting surface has a dull, slightly grimy varnish; no tears visible.
