About the Item
Thompson. A black-hulled schooner drives from left to right under a full press of cream canvas, the Stars and Stripes at her masthead, her wake breaking green-white beneath the bow. The sea is a deep bottle green worked in short choppy strokes; the sky behind is a warm haze of cream and grey through which a square-rigger and the chalky bulk of the coast loom half-dissolved. The mood is quiet and atmospheric rather than dramatic. Presented on a printed mount with a titled caption panel, double-matted in slate grey and cream in an oak frame. Medium: offset lithograph on paper, hand-signed. Signed twice - printed within the image at lower left, and hand-signed in pencil on the mount at lower right, reading "Thompson". Edition: Special Edition. Inscribed on the reverse or mount: Yachts of the America's Cup; THE SCHOONER; On August 22, 1851, the yacht America outsailed the whole British fleet in a race around the Isle of Wight. The nearest British yacht to her, Aurora, finished 8 minutes after the America. America is pictured at the Nab Light with the rest of the fleet following her into Sandown Bay. The 100 Guinea Cup she won was renamed in her honor 'The America's Cup'.; Special Edition (pencil, lower left of the mount). Condition: No foxing or staining visible; mats clean and square. Heavy glare and a photographer's silhouette across the glazing in the frontal shot.
