About the Item
A quiet monochrome ink landscape: two large willows lean in from the left and right, their trailing branches drawn in fine grey strokes, and a low zigzag plank bridge with a railing crosses the water behind them. In the foreground a small dark boat sits on the shore beside a rock, with reeds and scrub dotted along the bank. The painting is almost entirely grey-black ink on cream paper, wet-brushed for the foliage masses and drawn with dry fine lines for the hanging branches. A brushed two-character signature and a small red seal sit at the upper right; the sheet is set behind a slate-grey mat and a natural linen-toned surround in a plain gilt frame under glass, with a small engraved brass plaque fixed to the mount at the bottom. Medium: ink and light wash on paper. Signed upper right of the sheet, brushed in ink above a red seal. Inscribed on the reverse or mount: HAND-PAINTED ... (first line of the brass plaque, only partly legible); ... FRAMED IN NEWPORT NEWS. (second line of the brass plaque). Condition: Paper is lightly toned overall with no visible foxing or tears; strong glare and shadow across the glass in most shots.
