Gothic Brass Rubbing of Madonna and Child, Framed
· 20th century rubbing after a medieval brass

About the Item
A brass rubbing taken in silver-white wax on near-black paper, showing the crowned Virgin seated on a canopied Gothic throne with the Child on her knee. Her mantle falls in long looping folds that are rendered as thousands of parallel rubbed lines, and the halo, crocketed pinnacles and traceried canopy are picked out in fine crisp detail. The strong tonal reversal gives the whole sheet the look of a negative engraving. Medium: wax rubbing (brass rubbing) on dark paper. Inscribed on the reverse or mount: 125 (handwritten in black on a round red price sticker on the glass, upper right). Condition: The glazing is dusty and scuffed with a round red price sticker adhered at the upper right; the black frame shows minor rubbing. The rubbing itself appears intact with no tears visible.
