About the Item
Painted on a mottled cream ground, a tall standing figure in a patterned leopard-spot robe holds a golden bowl at left, while two squat, muscular horned demons crouch to the right, one russet-skinned and one blue-black, each raising an instrument to its mouth. Drawing is in fine dark ink line with flat washes of iron red, slate, ochre and black, in the manner of Buddhist guardian imagery. The paper is heavily aged and cloudy, which gives the figures a smoky, antique presence. Presented in a plain bright gilt frame. Medium: ink and colour on paper. Condition: Ground heavily discoloured and blotched with age staining; scattered small losses and abrasion along the edges of the sheet.
