About the Item
A painted wooden panel in the Rajasthani manner: a haloed blue-skinned Krishna plays his flute on a lotus pedestal, flanked by four gopis in orange, green and yellow skirts beneath tall stylised palms, all set against a deep midnight ground stippled with white dots. Below, two white cows with red flower markings face a small cowherd, above a border of lotus blossoms on pale water. The whole image is enclosed by a broad orange border of black scrolling foliage. The surface is thickly and naively painted with hard bright colour and fine white dot outlining. Medium: gouache/tempera and gesso on wood panel. Condition: Paint losses and flaking along the top edge and corners, wear and rubbing to the orange border, edge chips to the wood, general grime consistent with age and use.
