· third quarter of the 20th century
Price Upon Request

About the Item
A lively etching, hand tinted with washes of ochre, rust and slate, showing a crowded street market beneath a stone gateway and tall blocky buildings. Dozens of small figures in long coats and caps stoop over trestle stalls or move away up the sunlit roadway, drawn in nervous scribbled line with the colour laid on loosely and allowed to run beyond the contours. The foreground stalls are worked in dense black hatching against the pale sanded roadway. A small monogram appears within the image at lower left. Medium: etching/drypoint with hand colouring on paper. Signed in pencil below the plate, lower right, with a date. Edition: Artist Proof. Inscribed on the reverse or mount: Artist Proof. Condition: Mat toned and lightly foxed at the lower edge; strong glare on the glass; image itself appears clean.
