About the Item
A tall gold-ground painting in the Japanese decorative manner: a heavy pine leans out from a rocky knoll at left, its dark trunk and layered green needle clusters silhouetted against a burnished ochre sky, with the white cone of Mount Fuji rising beyond a pale lake. A small figure in a red-collared robe stands on the knoll, a boat and a tiny promontory sit far out on the water, and a spray of pink blossom crosses the upper right. Colour is limited to gold, ink black, moss green and touches of coral, and the ground carries a granular gilt sparkle. Medium: ink, colour and gold ground on paper or board. Signed lower right, a vertical column of characters with a red seal below. Condition: Extensive brown foxing and water staining across the lower half of the gold ground, with scattered spots throughout; light surface abrasion; frame sound with minor rubbing.
