About the Item
豊国画 (Toyokuni ga). A full-length standing figure fills the sheet: a young nobleman in layered robes of indigo, russet and cream, patterned with roundels, chrysanthemum sprays and key-fret bands, his hair dressed in a black court style. He stands on a pale ground scattered with dark speckles, with a spray of plum blossom at lower left and a red rectangular title cartouche plus a small pictorial inset at upper right. Colours are limited to indigo, rust orange, olive and cream on toned, lightly foxed paper. Medium: colour woodblock print (nishiki-e) on Japanese paper. Signed cartouche at lower left of the print, reading "豊国画 (Toyokuni ga)". Inscribed on the reverse or mount: 源氏後集餘情 (Genji goshu yojo) , red title cartouche, upper right; small white cartouche below the title with cursive kana, not legible in the photographs; 豊国画 (Toyokuni ga) , red toshidama-style signature cartouche, lower left; 横川彫竹 (Yokokawa Horitake) , black square block-carver's seal beside the signature. Condition: Paper toned overall with scattered light foxing and a few brown stains at the right of the image; colours still strong. Viewed under glass with lamp reflections.
