Still Life With Stoneware Jug and Fruit, Segal, Signed, Framed
Segal · mid to late 20th century

About the Item
Segal. A warm-keyed still life: a bulbous red-brown glazed jug with a looped handle stands on a pale stone slab, flanked by a shallow wooden bowl of dark purple plums, a cluster of white eggs and two ripe oranges. Behind it the ground blazes in strokes of chrome yellow, gold and ochre suggesting sunlit grass, and the foreground drops into cool green and olive. The paint is applied thickly with a loaded brush, ridges catching the light on the jug's shoulder and along the ledge, and the canvas weave shows through the thinner passages. Medium: oil on canvas. Signed lower right of the canvas, painted in dark brown, reading "Segal". Inscribed on the reverse or mount: Segal (painted signature, lower right). Condition: Paint layer looks sound with no visible craquelure or losses; the linen slip is lightly soiled and the carved frame is rubbed and chipped along the outer edges with old dark finish worn back to bare wood at the corners.
