About the Item
A square composition organised like a leaded window: a grid of dark teal-blue bars divides the canvas into yellow, mauve and turquoise panes, each corner pane holding a single flat red apple. In the centre a lemon-yellow bowl heaped with scarlet apples sits beside a pale yellow jug and a long banana, against a turquoise pane. The yellow fields are worked in a dense granular impasto scattered with looping ochre scrollwork, so the surface glitters; the apples are laid in with thick vermilion and orange crusts. Medium: oil on canvas, heavy textured impasto. Signed centre right, across the yellow pane beside the large red apple. Condition: no visible issues; impasto sound.
