About the Item
A landscape-format canvas in a muted winter palette of cream, grey-brown, olive and soft ochre. A large bare tree with frost-laden branches dominates the left; behind it a small outbuilding, and to the right a timber cabin with a deep snow-laden roof and a lean-to shed, its dark doorway the darkest accent in the picture. A rutted track catches a low warm light and leads into the middle distance past a broken fence and clumps of dry grass. The paint is worked wet-in-wet with a loaded brush and knife, the snow scumbled in thick creamy strokes over a warm underlayer. Medium: oil on canvas. Signed lower right of the canvas. Condition: the linen liner is lightly soiled and shows scattered grey marks, worst along the lower edge; the gilt frame has rubbing and small losses on the carved crests. Paint film appears sound with no visible tears or flaking.
