About the Item

A hanging-scroll style painting on silk of a bearded elder in layered robes of pale gold, sage and dull rose, a hooded grey mantle over his head and a tall knotted staff in his right hand. A gentle spotted deer presses against his hip and gazes out at the viewer. The drawing is precise and linear in the gongbi manner, with fine ink contours filled by flat mineral washes, and the ground silk has toned to a warm dove grey. A four-character ink inscription and a small red seal are placed in the upper right. Medium: ink and colour on silk. Signed upper right, four characters in ink with a red seal below, reading "庚子初春". Inscribed on the reverse or mount: 庚子初春. Condition: The silk is toned overall and shows faint tide lines and scattered specks; the frame is heavily rubbed with the gesso and red bole exposed along the edges. Reflections on the glass in every shot.
