About the Item
J. GASTON. A grey-silver Paris nocturne: the Arc de Triomphe rises through mist at the centre-right while horse-drawn carriages and a knot of small dark figures move across a rain-slicked foreground that mirrors the lamplight in long vertical smears. A bare tree and a lit street lantern anchor the left edge, with dabs of ochre and gold foliage. The paint is applied wet-into-wet with a palette knife and stiff brush in silver-grey, charcoal, cream and rust, and the figures are indicated with quick single-stroke touches of red and white. Medium: oil on canvas. Signed lower right of the canvas, in dark grey block capitals, reading "J. GASTON". Accompanied by a certificate: Small printed verso label headed 'Certificate of Authenticity - Collier Art Corporation', filled in by hand: artist Bernhard, media Original Oil, title Elegance, size 19530-170, with an authorized signature. Inscribed on the reverse or mount: J. GASTON; Certificate of Authenticity - Collier Art Corporation; ARTIST Bernhard; MEDIA Original Oil. Condition: Painting appears sound with good impasto. The gilt frame has scattered rubbing and small chips to the raised ornament. The verso labels are torn, foxed and partly lifted.
