Autumn Woodland Path in Gilt Frame, Framed

About the Item

A tonal woodland interior: slender bare trunks rise the full height of the canvas while a pale sandy path curves from the lower left into a luminous grey-gold clearing at the centre. Copper and rust foliage clusters on the right-hand trees, and a dark bank of scrub and boulders masses along the path's edge. The whole picture is worked in a narrow range of browns, ochres and warm greys with a single soft light source in the mist, and the varnish has darkened so that the shadows are now almost opaque. Small birds are flicked into the sky in dark specks. Medium: oil on canvas. Condition: The varnish is noticeably discoloured and the darks have sunk, which is typical of age; some surface grime. The gilt frame has rubbing and small losses to the high points of the ornament. No tears or obvious repairs visible.
